Travel Photographer

As an experienced travel photographer, I create engaging, high-quality imagery that brings destinations, people and experiences to life. Based in the North East, my work takes me across North East England, Yorkshire, the North York Moors, the Lake District and throughout the UK. My experience includes working with tourism organisations, local authorities and businesses, including Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans), Dumfries and Galloway Tourism and the North York Moors National Park. I have documented major tourism and news events, including the Endeavour sailing into Whitby Harbour, as well as destinations, landscapes, culture and everyday life. My travel photography covers heritage, attractions, hospitality, food and drink, transport, retail, leisure, events and outdoor activities, creating authentic imagery for travel publications, websites, brochures, PR, social media and marketing campaigns.

Travel Photojournalist

My journey as a travel photojournalist started in southern Scotland before taking me to the North East of England, where I have worked for many years. From here, my curiosity has taken me across the globe, documenting destinations, people, landscapes, cultures and everyday life across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. As a photojournalist, I enjoy the freedom to explore, observe and respond to what is happening around me. I often travel with just one camera and one lens, looking beyond the obvious and noticing the small details, from shadows falling across an old street to someone working on a fishing boat or a worshipper lighting incense in a Hong Kong temple. This instinctive approach continues to influence my commissioned photography shoots, helping me remain observant and alert to unexpected moments and authentic stories.

Street life Photographer

Being a Northern England street life photographer can be exhilarating and exhausting because the pace of everyday life can change in an instant. A fleeting expression, a particular shape or an interaction between strangers can appear for a split second and then disappear. The North of England provides endless opportunities, from the character and atmosphere of Whitby to the energy of cities such as Newcastle, York and Leeds. I enjoy looking for those small, unscripted moments that reveal something special about a place and its people. Further afield, I would love to return to New York where the buzz, movement and sheer visual energy make street photography pure magic. It really is the ‘city that never sleeps’.

Landscape Photographer

My journey as a landscape photographer started in my early teens, when I travelled around Dumfries and Galloway by bicycle, long before I could drive. I was fortunate to have beautiful rural countryside on my doorstep and spent hours capturing everything from golden sunrises and dramatic sunsets to farmers working the land and ramblers heading out into the countryside. Today, I continue to be inspired by the incredible landscapes of North Yorkshire, the North York Moors, the Lake District and Northumberland, each offering their own distinctive character, light and atmosphere. I enjoy observing how people interact with the landscape too. Including people can add commercial value and make an image more useful for tourism and marketing, while people-free landscapes can often have greater longevity, avoiding clothing and trends that can date an image.

City Scape Photographer

As a cityscape photographer, I have been privileged to photograph some remarkable cities around the world, each with its own visual character and energy. From viewing Tokyo from the Sky Tree and taking in the incredible scale of the city, to photographing the Brooklyn Bridge in New York at 4am, these moments offer a unique perspective on urban life. Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay was equally breathtaking, blending futuristic architecture with nature, while London’s architecture, culture and history continue to attract visitors from across the globe. Closer to home, I enjoy photographing cities such as Newcastle, Edinburgh and Manchester, where modern development is transforming the skyline while traditional architecture and industrial heritage remain firmly part of their identity. For me, cityscape photography is about capturing that changing relationship between old and new, people, buildings, light and place.

Lifestyle Content Creator

Looking for a lifestyle content creator in the North East? The title may be relatively new, but it is essentially what I have been doing for years as a commercial, editorial and PR photographer. I enjoy the layered approach it brings, showing not just a person or product, but the wider look, feel and story around it. Whether capturing people at work, enjoying leisure time, using a product or simply going about everyday life, I look for authentic images with strong visual appeal. I have created content for M&S trade magazine at a shoot in Newcastle as well capturing lifestyle retail photography at Sunderland’s Dalton Park and Teesside Park in Stockton. I have also photographed Middlesbrough’s vibrant Orange Pip Market and each assignment demands creative flair, observation and a strong sense of place. I create versatile lifestyle content for brands’ social media platforms, businesses, tourism organisations and marketing campaigns.

Fine Art Photographer

As a North East fine art photographer, I enjoy creating distinctive images that move beyond simply recording what is in front of the camera. I look for shapes, shadows, reflections, patterns, textures, unusual perspectives and double exposures that can transform an ordinary scene into something more intriguing. This creative approach can also have real commercial value, from a striking image displayed across a boardroom alongside a company mission statement, to an atmospheric photograph running across an investment brochure or a distinctive print designed for a workplace or client environment. I would love to discuss ideas, explore endless possibilities and work with art direction to create something truly individual. Based in the North East, I regularly provide fine art and creative photography across Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Leeds and London.

Sea Scapes Photographer

I have always had a love for the coast, having grown up in Dumfries and Galloway with Kippford and the Solway Firth on my doorstep. The sea and coastline have been a natural part of my photography ever since, and I still enjoy arriving somewhere by the water and simply seeing what the light and tide have to offer. In the 1990s, I was commissioned to document Dunnottar Castle near Aberdeen, with its rugged coastline providing a memorable backdrop. Since moving to the North East, I have continued to explore its coastline, from modern EDF Renewables wind turbines silhouetted against beautiful sunrises and sunsets to Victorian Saltburn and its historic cliff lift. I was also commissioned by Hartlepool Borough Council to document the Tall Ships Races, capturing the spectacular fleet, colourful sails, lively waterfront and crowds as the coastline came alive. For me, the coast has a wonderful ability to both slow you down and excite you, while always offering something new to photograph.

I’ve worked with Dave extensively over the years, his distinct visual style and eye for detail always elevate the final product, bringing a polished and creative touch to every image. Beyond the exceptional quality of his work, he’s reliable, professional, and a pleasure to work with.

Dominic Inman, Senior Designer, CPI

Excellent PR photography shoot and Dave’s understanding of what kind of shot would be picked up by editors made our campaign a real success. Goes above and beyond and we now have a fabulous bank of photography for social media too.

Kim Gallagher, The Well Group

It’s an absolute pleasure to work with Dave on our company photography. We’re proud of being down to earth and not corporate, and Dave captures that brilliantly regardless of whether the shot is candid, posed or a headshot. He really cares about capturing the essence of an organisation and spent time understanding who we are.
