Editorial Photography for the Civil Nuclear Constabulary at Hartlepool Power Station

No two photo assignments are the same and some require working in environments which are challenging with strict protocols to adhere to. One such complex, but hugely rewarding, assignment was a commission by the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) which resulted in two jobs, one at Hartlepool Power Station, on Teesside.

At the Hartlepool shoot, during a tight three-hour window, I had to navigate the challenges of working within a live power plant environment to take images that captured both the deterrent nature of nuclear policing with the ‘softer’ photographs needed for both recruitment and public engagement.

Balancing High-Security Protocol with Creative Editorial Flair

Shoots such as this one really do require creativity as policing imagery necessitates absolute attention to detail and adherence to protocol. My focus was to capture officers in immaculate dress, caps on and hair tied back and strictly no hands in pockets. The carriage of weapons also had to be technically spot-on making me as much an observer of protocol as a commercial photographer in Northern England. This really was a masterclass in meeting an exact professional brief in a high security setting, while maintaining creative flair to produce first-class imagery.

To fully illustrate ‘a day in the life’ of the CNC officers, my brief also included capturing the more ‘human’ side of the officers where I photographed them engaging with the public, answering their questions and providing directions. I was also granted access to behind the scenes for more candid shots of the officers in the gym and mess room as well as getting kitted out and undertaking team briefings.

Creative Branding for Recruitment Campaigns

This afternoon shoot gave me the chance to take advantage of the natural light resulting in some atmospheric twilight shots which meant the images captured throughout the sessions ranged from the grit of the ‘deter’ stance to the warmth of a recruitment-focused smile. The shoot allowed me to use my creative flair to capture the officers with the power station as a visible location in the background. These more artistic images are great for both social media feeds and any recruitment campaigns.

Building Trust in Corporate Photography

The importance of trust in corporate photography is absolutely vital. It is through my professionalism and creativity of that initial commission in Hartlepool, that the CNC re-commissioned me to work on the second commercial shoot. Their trust in me and my skills means the CNC now has a comprehensive and versatile library of images for use across multiple platforms including Instagram, LinkedIn and other social media.
