As a golf fan it was easy for me to get into the swing for a photo shoot featuring PGA professional golfer Aaron Cox for the official Association monthly magazine.
The brief for the editorial photography commission was multi-disciplined with shots to include branding, Aaron coaching young male and female golfers and candid natural shots of Aaron relaxing in order to visually capture all elements of the magazine feature.
At the lifestyle shoot at Blackwell Grange in Darlington, I chatted with Aaron to discuss what shots were needed and, as always with editorial briefs, it was important to get a good range of portrait and landscape photographs, with clean backgrounds for sharp images that can have accompanying text overlaid at the design stage.
As the shoot was for the PGA magazine, photographing Aaron with branded equipment was key so as well as action shots, I took a selection of both indoor and outdoor images with Aaron and branded golf bags and signage for the golf course. Ensuring these look natural, while clearly showing the brand and logo requires clear communication throughout the session.
The Saturday morning shoot in County Durham resulted in a gallery of action shots and posed images of Aaron and the young golfers he was coaching and I delivered a carefully curated portfolio for the editorial team at PGA Monthly. The magazine feature with my images is here. The content director at PGA Monthly gave me a five star review on Google with a comment saying “excellent, professional and prompt service”.
It was a privilege to capture Aaron’s infectious energy and drive as he worked with the young golfers who may one day be lifting the Wanamaker PGA trophy on the 18th green. I certainly picked up a few tips to take onto the course to up my chances of bagging a birdie.
It was certainly a hole-in-one of a photo shoot!
