I often recruit people of all ages, looks and abilities to appear in my lifestyle photo sessions — from families and professionals to older couples or teenagers. Recent North East assignments include capturing a housing group in South Shields, lifestyle images for Middlesbrough’s TK Maxx, and the launch of the visitor centre at Skelton near Saltburn. Using real people rather than professional models gave these images the informal, genuine feel clients wanted — because authenticity can’t be staged.
A great example is the North East Walk to Work campaign, featuring a real family wrapped up for a walk. The warmth and connection between them added real-life credibility to the images.
Of course, some projects demand professional models. For a Middlesbrough fashion event, I worked with Tyne Tees Models, producing striking lifestyle imagery for a Teesside marketing agency. Professional models bring valuable experience, but the growing trend for authentic lifestyle photography — combined with tighter budgets — has boosted the demand for non-professionals.

I always keep my sessions relaxed and enjoyable. Participants often comment on how much fun they’ve had, forgetting they’re in front of a camera. I prefer natural moments over posed shots — sometimes asking people not to look at the lens at all. When children are involved, I get them engaged in the process, whether holding reflectors or snapping photos themselves — keeping everyone relaxed and genuine.
